MacOS desktop app - Enterprise Settings via Intune

This guide delivers the Enterprise Settings file to Intune-enrolled Macs. On macOS, the file controls the app's visibility mode and related options. It assumes the app is deployed to at least a test Mac (see macOS desktop app - install via Intune).

The file

Deploy a file to this exact path on every Mac:

/Library/Application Support/Scribe/Enterprise Settings

The app reads it when it launches.

No extension on the file name. Content is JSON. For a deployment where users mainly capture in the background, the app should stay running, and IT manages versions:

{
  "is_central_deployment": true,
  "keep_alive": true,
  "visibility_mode": "minimal"
}

All keys the file accepts:

Key Values Effect
is_central_deployment boolean Tells the app that IT manages its version: update prompts are not shown and the app's own update check reports that updates are managed. Use with Intune-managed updates (see the install guide)
visibility_mode normal, minimal normal is the full app. minimal reduces the app to its menu bar icon and essentials, for deployments where users mainly use background capture. Main window and manual capture are still possible but more hidden
keep_alive boolean Registers a macOS background item that relaunches Scribe if it is quit or crashes, so it stays running. For always-on deployments
pause_hours array of hours, default [1, 24, 0] The pause options for background capture offered in the menu bar icon's menu: each positive number is "pause for that many hours", 0 is "turn off". An empty array offers no pause options

Invalid keys or values can disable a setting or the whole file, with no error shown. Check the JSON before deploying it.

Deliver it

Intune → Devices → macOS → Shell scripts → Add. Upload a script such as:

#!/bin/bash
mkdir -p "/Library/Application Support/Scribe"
cat > "/Library/Application Support/Scribe/Enterprise Settings" << 'EOF'
{
  "is_central_deployment": true,
  "keep_alive": true,
  "visibility_mode": "minimal"
}
EOF
chmod 644 "/Library/Application Support/Scribe/Enterprise Settings"

Settings: run script as signed-in user No (it runs as root, which the path requires), and set a script frequency, for example every hour, so the file is restored if it is removed or changed. Assign to your rollout group.

The script, ready to upload (remove the .txt suffix after download):

Deploy-EnterpriseSettings-macOS.sh.txt

Verify on one Mac

  1. In Terminal: cat "/Library/Application Support/Scribe/Enterprise Settings" shows your JSON.
  2. Quit Scribe fully and relaunch it. The file is read at launch, so a change only takes effect after a restart of the app.
