This guide deploys the Scribe desktop app to Intune-managed Windows devices. The installer is a standard MSI, so any MDM that supports silent MSI installation works similarly. The steps below use Microsoft Intune.
To configure the app for managed deployment, also deploy the Enterprise Settings file. This lets you hide update notices, keep the app running, and set the app’s visibility mode. See Windows Desktop App - Enterprise Settings via Intune.
For silent authentication with Microsoft Entra, see Windows Desktop App - Silent Authentication with Microsoft Entra.
Prerequisites
- Intune-managed Windows devices.
- The Scribe for Windows MSI from scribehow.com/get-desktop.
Pilot first, then roll out. Set up the configuration on one test device before deploying it to your organization. If you are using the app, Enterprise Settings, and silent authentication, apply them in this order on the test device:
- Install the app.
- Deploy the Enterprise Settings file.
- Configure silent authentication.
- Relaunch the app after each change.
For the broader rollout, deploy the configuration in the reverse order so the correct settings are already available when users first launch the app:
- Silent authentication consent.
- Enterprise Settings file.
- Scribe desktop app.
Add the app
- In the Intune admin center, go to Apps → All apps → Create.
- Select Line-of-business app as the app type.
- Select Select app package file, then upload the Scribe MSI.
- In App information, set App install context to Device.
-
In Command-line arguments, enter:
ALLUSERS=1 AI_INSTALLPERUSER=0 LAUNCH_AT_STARTUP=1 DISABLE_AUTOUPDATES=1
Intune reads the publisher, version, and product code from the MSI, so detection is handled automatically.
- Assign the app as Required for the group you are rolling out to.
- Leave Ignore app version set to No.
The app installs on the device at its next Intune check-in. To trigger a check-in manually, go to Settings → Accounts → Access work or school, select the connected account, choose Info, and select Sync.
About the install arguments
Use all four installation arguments:
-
ALLUSERS=1andAI_INSTALLPERUSER=0install the app per machine inC:\Program Files\Scribe. -
LAUNCH_AT_STARTUP=1starts the app when each user signs in. -
DISABLE_AUTOUPDATES=1disables the app’s automatic update checks. Versions are managed through Intune instead.
Per-user installation is not available through Intune’s line-of-business app deployment. The app installs per machine.
Updates
Versions are managed by IT. When you want to update the fleet:
- Go to the existing Intune app.
- Select Properties → App information → Edit.
- Select the new Scribe MSI.
- Save the changes.
Devices upgrade in place during their next Intune check-in. Keep Ignore app version set to No.
To prevent users from seeing an update notice that they cannot act on, deploy an Enterprise Settings file containing:
{
"is_central_deployment": true
}
See Windows Desktop App - Enterprise Settings via Intune for details about creating and delivering the file.
If you also use silent authentication, minimal mode, or keep-alive, include all settings in the same Enterprise Settings file and deliver it once.
Verify on one device
- Confirm that the app is installed in
C:\Program Files\Scribe. - Sign out of Windows and sign back in.
- Confirm that the Scribe app starts automatically.
A silent installation does not launch the app when the installation finishes. The app starts at the user’s next sign-in.
Win32 app deployment
Intune also supports Win32 app deployment using .intunewin packages with custom detection and requirement rules. If your organization standardizes on Win32 apps, you can use the same MSI and installation arguments. Only the packaging and detection configuration change.
