MacOS Desktop App - Install Via Intune

This guide deploys the Scribe desktop app to Intune-enrolled Macs. To configure the app - visibility mode, keeping it running, IT-managed updates - deliver the Enterprise Settings file as well, per macOS desktop app - Enterprise Settings via Intune. The app reads that file when it launches: on a test Mac, deploy the app first and the file after, relaunching the app to see the settings; for the rollout, deliver the file before the app so each user's first launch already has them.

Prerequisites

  • Intune-enrolled Macs.
  • The Scribe for macOS dmg from scribehow.com/get-desktop. There are separate builds for Apple silicon and Intel Macs; push the one matching each device.

Add the app

  1. Intune admin center → Apps → macOS → Add → app type macOS app (DMG) → upload the dmg.
  2. Included apps: bundle ID com.scribehow.ScribeDesktop, version as in the dmg filename.
  3. Ignore app version: depends on how you want updates handled - see Updates below. No if IT manages versions, Yes if the app updates itself.
  4. Assign as Required to your rollout group.

The app lands in /Applications on the device's next check-in. Intune does not start it; users open it the first time. To trigger a check-in: Company Portal → the device → ⋯ → Check Status.

Updates

Two ways to handle versions; pick one.

IT-managed: set Ignore app version to No. To move the fleet to a new version, upload the new dmg to this same Intune app and set the new version under Included apps (Properties → App information → Edit, then Included apps → Edit) - Intune compares that field with the installed version. The update applies when Scribe is not running, in practice at the device's next restart or sign-out. Add "is_central_deployment": true to the Enterprise Settings file (see macOS desktop app - Enterprise Settings via Intune) so users do not see update prompts; the app's own update check then reports that updates are managed.

Self-updating: set Ignore app version to Yes, so Intune does not reinstall the older version over the app's own updates. The app checks for updates itself and installs them.

Verify on one Mac

  1. Scribe Desktop appears in /Applications.
  2. Launch it once; it opens and shows the sign-in screen.
