Remote Desktop, Citrix, and VDI Compatibility with Optimize

Optimize captures activity on the machine where the work actually happens - so for Citrix, VDI, or remote desktop setups, the key is making sure Scribe is installed in the right place.

The rule: Install Scribe inside the remote/virtual session itself, not just on the local physical device. When set up this way, capture works normally.

If Scribe is only installed locally and tries to capture a remote desktop window instead, quality drops sharply - steps show generic "click here" labels instead of real actions, and screenshots can come back blank.

One Citrix-specific quirk: even with Scribe installed correctly, Citrix sometimes hides the real application behind a generic wrapper name (e.g. "Citrix HDX Engine"), so it won't auto-suggest for whitelisting. If that happens, Support can add it manually.

Browser-based workflows inside a remote session aren't affected by any of this — the extension works as expected as long as it's installed and signed in within that same session.

Quick troubleshooting checklist

  1. Is Scribe installed inside the remote/virtual session (not the local device)?
  2. Is the participant signed in on that same session?
  3. Missing a Citrix desktop app from your whitelist suggestions? Contact Support to add it manually.
  4. Seeing generic "click here" steps or blank screenshots? Scribe is likely capturing from the wrong location — recheck #1.
  5. Still stuck? Some virtualization software needs Scribe to run with admin permissions — check with IT, then escalate to Support with session logs.
